start a blog

How to start a blog in kenya – beginners guide book

Blogging has reached a level where you can make a decent income from it while at home. The good news is, you don’t have to be an expert to start a blog in this modern day. it’s really easy to get started. In fact, within 30 minutes you can have your blog up and running. So the big question is, why do I have to start a blog?  what benefits do I get? what am I going to blog about? and so forth.

People start blogs to make money out of it. I have seen many successful bloggers make six figures on a monthly basis on the comfort of there house. So, guys, it can be done. If you are a beginner and see the potential of blogging, it all begins by setting up that blog. Don’t worry about making mistakes, we all learn from mistakes. But if you follow this article and the pieces of advice I give, you won’t get in trouble. Am saying this because I have been in the game for a while now and know what works and what doesn’t.

Inorder to start a blog ,there are certain things you need to consider,

  1. Choose a blogging platform.
  2. Get a  domain name and hosting service at an affordable fee .
  3. Set up wordpress.
  4. Look for a free theme for starters.
  5. Decide what you’re going to blog about and start posting.
  6. Get traffic to your site by being active on social media and doing basic seo.

Choosing a blogging plartform

There are many platforms where you can develop your blog. You have basically heard about wordpress, Wix ,Joomla,Blogger,Weebly and so forth. But out of all this, wordpress(self-hosted) is by far the most popular and most used platform in the world today. In fact, this is what I use and recommend to clients. But remember there is a difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org. WordPress.com is free but has a lot of cons,

  • You won’t be able to have your unique domain. Your domain will look something like this yourblog.wordpress.com  That is so unprofessional if you want to become a serious blogger.
  • Another thing is you won’t be able to fully monetize your blog. The number of images and videos you want to upload is also limited since they provide you with limited space.

On the other hand, With wordpress.org you can be able to do anything with your blog including naming it the way you want ie yourblog.com, you have complete access to free wordpress themes among other benefits.

Domain name registration

You need to decide whether you want a www or non-www version (www.technish.co.ke or technish.co.ke). Both of them are great but you need to decide which one you prefer and stick to it.

Another thing you should consider is whether you want a .com or .org or .co.ke. If you are from Kenya, then go with .co.ke  but you can still use .com or .org which are more internationally recognized. When picking a domain name make sure it’s easy to remember. Last but not least, when picking a domain name make sure it’s unique and it’s not ranking on Google at that moment.

Hosting service

There are many hosting services both in the country and outside. If your writing for a Kenyan audience then go for a local hosting company. I have shared a list of top hosting companies in kenya which can help you decide the one to go with. But if you want to write for a big audience like USA,uk,canada etc then you can try hosting companies outside the country. Though they may be costly , there services are great. I also come up with the best hosting companies in the USA for those who want a bigger audience. After doing my research I found that Truehost which is a Kenyan based hosting company is one of the cheapest when it comes to hosting. They have a package where you just buy a .co.ke domain for 560 ksh and hosting is free. But with that you can’t really upload so much stuff. It’s basically for beginners.

If you want a successful blog that will get you a lot of traffic then Bluehost is the hosting provider you should consider. You will be able to pay as little as $3 dollars a month for hosting and their domains range from $5 – $10 a year. So it’s entirely up to you to decide what company you want to host with and of course how fat your pocket is.

Setting up wordpress

Blogging with wordpress is the best decision you can ever make. There are many content management systems out there but wordpress is simply the best since it’s easy to master and is used by majority of websites on the web. If you want to know how to set up wordpress then I got you covered. Therefore am going to show you how to install wordpress on Bluehost . According to the blogging community ,Bluehost is the best web hosting provider. Their customer support is also wonderful.

Step 1: Head over to bluehost .Disclosure: I worked out a deal with them where you can get started for just $3.95 a month (plus you will get a free domain). Bluehost does compensate me every time someone signups, but this is at no cost to you.

step 2: As you can see the package includes a 24/7 customer support which you will definitely need. If you don’t like the services you can get back your money before 30 days. They also have a free ssl certificate. Scroll up and click Get started.
step 3: At this point you need to select a plan. There is the basic plan, plus and choice plus. For beginners I recommend you try the basic plan which comes at $ 3.95 a month. This package is for 1 website, 50 GB disc space, 5 email accounts  and much more. If you feel that you will need more than one website and many email addresses as I do. Go for the choice Plus plan. But for the sake of this tutorial lets select basic plan which is a good option as well.step 4: Now its time to choose a domain name. A domain name wiill be the brand of your business. make sure to come up with something people will be able to remember when they want to visit your site. If you already have a domain name, sign up with the domain name and click next. Also  pick a .com or .org since they are the most well known.step 5: On the next page if you see the domain [Yourdomain.com] for example is available then your good to go. Next, Fill the fields with the necessary details.Under the package information, I recommend you select the 36 months plan which has an advantage over the others. Its price per month is a bit lower. Under package extras you can deselect everything. Under payment information, choose whether you want to pay with credit card or paypal.  agree to the terms and condition and click submit.Step 6: Once you have submitted your application. You will receive an email with details on how you will login to your cpanel. The login credentials will contain the username and password. Next you have to log in to the cpanel.

step 7: Once your logged in. scroll down to the website section and click install wordpress.

step 8: You will then be directed to Bluehost marketplace quick install screen for wordpress. Click on get started button.

step 9: You will be asked to select the domain name for registration and then click the next button.

step10: On the next page , you need to enter your sites name ,admin username and admin password. The admin username and password will be used to log into your dashboard. Then click install to install wordpress.

Once it has successfully installed, Congratulations!!! you have created a blog.As you can see the process is fairly easy. Starting a blog is that simple ,there is no coding knowledge required.

Click http://yourblog.com/wp-admin to land on your dashboard area. Your dashboard is where you can install plugins, install themes and start posting articles. If you want to know how to install a plugin, I got you covered. At this moment your site is live.

Look for a theme

There are dozens of themes out there both free and premium .  If you are serious guy who wants to take blogging to next level then go with premium themes which offer alot of customization. But if your budget is small ,don’t worry  I got you sorted. There are plenty of free themes that are good for business. For starters ,just go on and try the free themes and after you are comfortable you can upgrade to a premium theme.

Decide what your going to blog about and start posting.

There are many topics you can blog about. But the challenge is ,many people have already written a blog on that topic. So what will make you different? You have to produce unique, well-researched content that really stands out and adds value to your readers. Never copy other peoples content since you may get penalized and even your blog may be shut down. But worst case is a blog that is full of other peoples content never gets traffic and therefore you can’t make a single coin  .Once you have found a topic you like , start posting at least 3 posts a week .

Search engine optimisation and social media

In order for your blog to be found on major search engines like google and bing, you need to optimize it for search engines. There are two techniques, that is on-page and off-page optimization.  As a blogger you need to understand that there are many people who are producing content like your’s, so apart from having good content, you need to optimize it for search engines. I have covered every single thing about on-page and off-page seo techniqes on another post. Feel free to check it out. Furthermore, you should be active on facebook, twitter etc since that is where most of your customers hung out.

That’s it for now . If you need any assistance setting up your blog you can contact us and we will be ready to help .Thank you for your time and as I say ” until next time”.
